Hannah Lamb – Workshops

You may have noticed that news from my studio has been a little quiet lately. Having caught my breath from other projects, I can now announce some new workshops for 2017. Amongst some established favourites I also have some brand new workshops for 2017, including some two-day weekend workshops.

New workshops for the year ahead include a Hand Stitch Sampler weekend in which we will explore and experiment with contemporary ways to use decorative stitches. Another workshop I am very excited to announce is Patching & Place; an opportunity to respond to the heritage of cloth production in Yorkshire, we will combine cyanotype print with stitch and patchwork techniques. We will also explore cyanotype and hand embroidery in the popular Inspiration from Historical Textiles.

Workshops take place at my studio on the top floor of the Butterfly Rooms in the UNESCO World Heritage model village of Saltaire, West Yorkshire. With perhaps one of the best views of Saltaire village, the studio certainly has a unique perspective!

You can find more details or book a place now on my website. There is also the option to buy a workshop as a gift… so feel free to forward this, as a not so subtle hint to your nearest and dearest!

Designing and making fused glass dishes

Spun Sugar dishWith a new year comes new plans and aspirations and this year at The Butterfly Rooms our aim is to do more to support and promote the work of the local artists and designers who work with us, alongside us or showcase their work in our shop. First up, is the work of Jo Whitehead who produces some fabulous glassware when she’s not helping me manage the shop. Here she explains about her work, inspirations and also offers a great workshop for those of you who might wish to try glass design out for yourselves!

J Whitehead 1a

I originally trained as a textile designer and moved to working with glass because of the tactile nature of the medium. My approach is design-led, treating the glass as a surface to be decorated with vibrant colour and pattern.  I love bright, brash colour like the colourings found in artificial textile and food dyes. I keep a notebook to jot down colour combinations and ideas, visiting textile and quilt exhibitions for inspiration.   My inspiration for my glass design has evolved over the past few years and I have explored many techniques in glass fusing to find my way in establishing my own style.

All my glass is kiln formed and finished to a high standard, using quality materials to create functional platters, dishes, coasters and decorative pieces for the home.  I mainly use Bullseye glass and I expect my glass items to endure and keep their quality.

Designing and making fused glass dishes Sunday 12 June 2016 10am to 3pm at The Butterfly Rooms Cost: £80 per person – places limited to 4

Enjoy a day designing and making fused glass dishes. Experiment with opal and transparent colour glass – stunning results and lots of fun. No previous experience of glass cutting is necessary. All materials and kiln firing are included in the price. However, a charge of £4.20 is required to post your dishes to you or, alternatively, you can collect them from The Butterfly Rooms.

About the workshop: The workshop will be friendly and relaxed and each student will be working at their own pace. There will be some formal instruction alongside the chance to experiment and take risks. There will be handouts for students to take away with them.
